Black or Gray

Some colors that are called “gray” are transparent and get very black in masstone. Black or gray paints are typically used in mixing to lower the chroma and value of other paints. They may also be used as a convenient way to paint objects that are black or silhouetted, though some artists prefer mixing their own blacks.

Necessary slot? No, but it can be convenient to have a very black black if you frequently paint black objects, such as silhouettes, crows, or the pupils of eyes.

Mix your own: Any complementary color pair or primary triad, if the component colors have enough value range (i.e. not opaque).
