I’ve been using the Schmincke Pretty in Pink palette at my desk, and that combined with the recent Jackson’s sale has inspired me to try some new Schmincke colors.
Schmincke – Ruby Red Deep (PR264)

I like Pyrrole Rubin from Holbein, but not really from DS. I’d never tried Schmincke before so I decided to give it a try. I don’t really like it! It doesn’t seem to have as much value range and is not as easy to grade as Holbein’s, and it has a bit more drying shift; they look the same wet but the Schmincke color is also a little lower chroma/grayed out once dry.
Schmincke – Titanium Gold Ochre (PBr24)

I really like my usual Winsor & Newton Naples Yellow Deep (PBr24), I wondered if I would like this better because Schmincke doesn’t tend to dry as hard. This is quite similar to Winsor’s version, but I think I kinda…don’t like it as much? It’s subtle, but there’s something a little lower chroma/paler about it, so it seems milky in a way that Winsor’s does, at least to my eye.
Schmincke – Manganese Violet (PV16) (Again)
I was embarrassed by my inability to do Manganese Violet swatches in the March Madness bracket despite it doing well into the second round. I’ve actually tried it before, but only from a dot (graciously shared with me by Lynne). I wasn’t super into it then, but weirdly it is growing on me.

The more I use it, the more I feel there is a magic feeling in the granulation which appears to visibly separate and appear as it dries. It’s also great in brown mixes for bark.
