Spring is suddenly upon us, but March still felt like winter. While I didn’t have a ton of time to paint this month, when I did, I concentrated on everyday moments from wintry scenes, knowing in April, I’d be busy with new shoots and flowers!
Photo to Painting

I emphasized the sunset which I found more evident in real life than in the photo. It’s hard to paint a lot of bare trees and have it not be to busy.

I love the reference, but I hate the painting. The painting definitely feels unfinished, but I kind of gave up on it after not achieving what I set out to achieve with the paper towel-lifted sky. (I also tried salt on another iteration, but every time I try salt, I hate it.)

By contrast, this is an example of a reference photo that looks like nothing at all, but it did its job, which is to remind me of the way I was fascinated by the way the afternoon light glowed pink on the snowy roof of the house.

An old snow photo of mine, painted in an experiment with creating a “center of interest” (right in the center!) by making part of the scene higher contrast and more detailed. This might be the last time I paint snow for awhile!
