Beautiful Landscapes, Idly Painted

Color Spotlight: Anthraquinone Scarlet (PR168)

Daniel Smith – Anthraquinone Scarlet (PR168)

Anthraquinone Scarlet (PR168) is a transparent orange-red in the highly hue-variable anthraquinone family, which also brings you genuine Alizarin Crimson (PR83), middle-red Anthraquinone Red (PR177), rare Anthraquinone Yellow (PY147), and my fave Indanthrone Blue (PB60).

At first paintout I thought this looked like Quin Coral (PR209), but you can see from the swatch below that Quin Coral is much pinker and cooler. Anthraquinone Scarlet is definitely a scarlet.

What others say

PR168 has a unique light scarlet hue that seems useful for botanical or portrait palettes, but is less effective as a general purpose red paint.

Conclusion

I don’t think this is a bad pick especially if you like the hue. For those looking for a transparent red-orange to replace the formerly redder hue of PO71, this might be a contender (along with Perylene Scarlet). Personally, for me it’s close enough to PR209 (but not as nice of a hue IMO) that it’s unlikely to make it onto my palette.
