About Triadvent
Today I drew:
- Schmincke Horadam – May Green (PY151, PG7)
- Holbein – Quinacridone Violet (PV19)
- Da Vinci – Cerulean Blue Genuine (PB36)

It’s a very cool selection. Yellow-green isn’t really a yellow, so that’s a bit of a stretch. In general I would have preferred a yellow in this slot, but that’s the problem with “rounding up” secondaries into primary slots. If I were to do this again, perhaps I would only count reds/pinks/magenta, yellows, and blue/cyan/teal as primary colors, and leave the true secondaries as “bonus colors” or similar since it’s a drag whenever they show up and it’s unfair to them to judge them on how well they do as primaries.
I like the Cerulean + QV purples.

I think this is one of your best ones yet! The May green appears to make an excellent lime/lemon yellow in dilution, and it looks very yellow in your painting!
I had a similar dilemma in my own version of this challenge, with a very yellow sap green (Qor) that was just a tiny little bit greener than PY 129 in mass tone. Oh dear, what to do… I put in in the blue box, but I might reconsider, in light of this. As well as Lynne’s post on the topic.
This is a very interesting and inspiring series of blogposts! Keep it up!
I’d sooner put an orange in the “yellow” slot than a true green, but this is not a bad triad at all.
Today I ditched all yellows except PY129 from my travel palette, and I reckon I won’t miss them.
I like your idea to leave the true secondaries as bonus colors for a triad challenge. I want to continue to work with triads on a regular basis, and I need to figure out how best to organize it for myself. Sometimes whether the selection works has to do with the other two colors. For example, the Quin Violet works as your red because you had cerulean as your blue. If you had pulled ultramarine violet as the blue, it would have been harder. Still fun to create with the colors, but harder.
