About Triadvent
Today I drew:
- Daniel Smith – Quinacridone Gold (PY150, PO48)
- Da Vinci – Burnt Sienna (PBr7)
- Daniel Smith – Phthalo Blue Green Shade (PB15:3)

This is somewhat reminiscent of my day 3, so I did another Winslow Homer copy; my reference was his painting “Horse and Plowman” which is at the Portland Museum of Art. Homer would have used Prussian Blue, Indian Yellow, and various earths.
My initial feeling about this triad was that it was annoying because Burnt Sienna is too close to Quin Gold. There’s not a lot of variety in those mixes. There’s no red, and no way to move the very greenish blue more violet; adding both Quin Gold and Burnt Sienna seems to make it a bit more greenish.
But it worked better than I thought. The Burnt Sienna was perfect for the horse, while the three colors together made the variety of greens. It was even possible to get a dark shadow color with the Burnt Sienna and Phthalo Blue.
I do feel that I wrung every bit of variety out of the triad in this scene, which is not always the case. I really longed for a red. I guess that’s the downside of my method of “rounding up” secondary colors to the nearest primary.
