Monthly Retrospective: April 2025

I did a burst of outdoor sketching this month, with the return of warmer weather and the development of my spring palette.

I’m feeling some rust in the studio lately, so I’m trying to enjoy some easier “assignments.”

Indoor Stuff

I tried my hand at a “Turner style” scene to try out Turner’s Yellow.

Skies are feeling more difficult than usual.

This next one is inspired by some early spring evening visits to my new nearby natural area, a wetland “urban wild,” to look for American woodcocks. I gave up on getting the light-on-dark clouds and just went way pink instead.

Some of my indoor paintings were also spring-inspired.

I’ve been following Lisa Spangler’s travel newsletter and it’s full of lovely, inspiring photos. I did this on a 6″x6″ Kilimanjaro square from my Cheap Joe’s memorial stash.
